How long does a visit take?

The nature of your visit can vary in duration from a short consultation of up to 1 hour through to a full assessment, which usually takes between 3 –4 hours. Please bring one of your child’s favourite toys for them to play with and should they require additional reassurance perhaps a family member, nanny or carer.

We aim to make the assessment as fun and relaxed as possible and a positive experience for you and your child. A full psychological assessment lasts for about 3- 4 hours and it is helpful to have any previous medical or school reports available before the assessment.

Your psychologist starts by talking to you about your child’s history, development, medical history, previous school, and their physical and social abilities. Testing then lasts about 1-½ - 2 hours and typically involves a cognitive assessment, tests of academic levels, social interaction, self esteem and their approach to learning new tasks.

Your child may then be closely observed in order to see them playing and interacting in a more natural way. If your Psychologist visits school this may involve observing them in the classroom and or in the playground. Testing of young children often involves playing with them using games, puzzles, drawings and looking at books and pictures.
